IMG 5081 Chetro Ketl kiva used for ceremonial reasons and used by the men of the tribe to watch Monday night football on television and drink beer, while the wives were preparing dinner. The columns that supported the roof are almost four feet in diameter, hauled from the Chusca Mountains 50 miles distant. Quite a feat, considering the Chacoans didn't have the wheel.

haines store Inscription on the cliff face between Pueblo Bonito and Chetro Ketl. 1887 H.L. HAINES STORE 10 MILES DOWN CANYON. There is an arrow at the right of the inscription that points in the direction of the store. The trading was the most remote in the in the area and not much known about it as it was not on reservation property but privately owned. It was later renamed Blakes Store and then the Tsaya Trading Post and still in business today although in a different location.. It was to become important in 1910 as the bullets were purchased at the trading post that killed Richard Wetherill.

IMG 5380 This area of the descent is where the group photographer almost tumbled over the cliff after taking this photo. With camera in hand and walking sticks planted on a stone, one of his telescoping walking sticks collapsed sending him airborne and potentially over the cliff if it hadn't been for the young tourist from Europe that caught him in mid-flight. Valuable lesson learned, always check your gear to make sure it's functioning properly.
